Choosing an Agent

While there are alternatives to working with an agent, selecting the right agent to work with is an extremely important step in securing a professional contract. Below are some factors to consider when making this decision.

  1. Are they licensed?

Anyone can act as a connector between you and an opportunity and there are many qualified and professional unlicensed agents. However, an unlicensed agent has not demonstrated the same knowledge of the legal and regulatory aspects of professional basketball that a licensed agent has. As such, a licensed agent is likely to be more knowledgeable about the legal components of your contract and can provide you better protection should there be any contractual issues. Further, a licensed agent also has an added level of legitimacy as they have invested time and money into becoming licensed and can have this license revoked should they violate certain expectations.

  1. How many players does the agent currently work with?

While not definitive, the number of players that an agent currently represents can help you better understand what they offer and how they work with clients. For example, an agent that typically works with a large number of clients (20+) may provide less individual attention but may also be more established and offer a more extensive network of opportunities. Alternatively, an agent that typically works with a smaller number of clients (less than 20) may be newer or less connected but will also likely be able to dedicate more time to marketing you to teams and provide more individualized attention.

  1. Where does the agent typically sign players?

Oftentimes agents will be best connected and most familiar with the regulations in certain regions. As such, an agent may tend to specialize in a specific area and place their clients predominantly in the region. Looking at where an agent has placed players in the past can help you determine where they are best connected, most likely to place you, and best equipped to represent you. However, Agent-Link significantly reduces the issue of agents being poorly connected outside of a specific area and makes this consideration less significant.

  1. Can you trust them?

While many agents are trustworthy and professional there are also agents that are not. First, as a rule of thumb, if an agent ever asks you for money then they are not legitimate and are trying to scam you. Teams will pay the agent directly and you should never be giving an agent money in exchange for a contract. Second, use the Agent-Link recommendations to help evaluate how agents interact with and treat their clients according to those that are familiar with or have worked with them in the past. Finally, while recommendations can help you get an initial impression of an agent it is recommended that you also directly contact those that have worked with them in the past such as the players they currently represent and those that have left recommendations on their profile.

  1. How does this agent typically interact with clients?

Choosing an agent that interacts with clients in a way that matches your needs can make the entire professional signing process much smoother. For example, some agents may be more hands-on and provide constant updates while others will only notify you when there is a legitimate chance of signing with a team. It is important that you reflect on what characteristics and style of communication are important to you and use Agent-Link recommendations to learn more about how an agent interacts with their clients.
