Creating a Highlight Tape

  1. Begin with a title card that includes your name, jersey number, nationality, height, weight, age, previous school/team and its location/level, top 3-5 stats, and any individual or team awards

  1. Determine what skill/skills makes your game stand out and add the most value for a team

  2. Determine the secondary strengths of your game

  3. Create a highlight 4-6 minutes long that includes a labeled section for each of your primary and secondary skills, giving additional attention to your top skill/skills and their various aspects (further explained below)

  4. Possible section titles could include the following. Remember there are many additional options and that you should tailor the sections to match your specific skill set

    1. Shooting, Rebounding, Defense, Cutting/Finishing, Passing, Driving

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Focus on your most valuable skills/what you add to the team

    • There’s no need to include dribble heavy or iso moves if that’s not your game

    • Coaches are looking for a player that can help them win, not the best 1v1 player

  • Show the different aspects of your top skill/skills

    • Shooters: show that you can shoot when spotting up, when coming off of screens, etc.

    • Slashers: show your ability to get to the rim off the dribble, off of cuts, in transition, etc.

  • Include defensive clips in your highlight tape

  • Show complete plays without fancy editing, this isn’t a mixtape
